Northwestern Elementary School
|
It has been a busy week for Northwestern students! We began with the annual 100th day celebrations in the primary grades, where students created fun items using "100" as a theme. Many creative projects were on display in the main hall, near the office, all day Tuesday.
Wednesday was the always interesting, often exciting, Science Fair! Sixth grade students conducted research and created designs to illustrate what they learned. Judges listened to presentation of findings and asked questions to challenge and learn more. This year's variety and quality were exceptional! I appreciate how much time students put into their projects, and recognize the support and encouragement families provided.
A special thank you is due the judges for Science Fair. Parents, Northwestern Elementary staff members, and other community leaders volunteer their evening to help this event go as smoothly as possible. A number of other staff members, directed by Mrs. Koloszar, worked for weeks to pull off Science Fair. I appreciate everyone involved, and am thankful for their dedication to the success of our students!
This year's Science Fair winners are: 1st Place - Tyler Wilson
2nd Place - Sarah Vas
3rd Place - Nick Sottong
4th Place - Kate Bilkey
5th Place - Gus Devaul
Have a great weekend!
Important Immunization Information
During the 2009 legislative session, Indiana Code 20-34-4-2 was revised, requiring the Indiana State Department of Health to "adopt rules under IC 4-22-2 to require school age children to receive additional immunizations against the following: Meningitis, Varicella, and Pertussis (whooping cough).
Due to this new legislation, we will see the following changes to the immunization requirements for the 2010-2011 school year:
- All 6th-12th grade students will be required to have 2 doses of Varicella vaccine or a history of chicken pox disease.
- All 6th-12th grade students will be required to have 1 dose of tetanus-diptheria-acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap) given on or after their 10th birthday.
- All 6th-12th grade students will be required to have 1 dose of meningococcal vaccine (MCV4).
If your child has already received these immunizations, please send a copy of their updated immunization information to the school so that I can update their health record. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the new immunization requirements.
