FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
We are beginning to plan for next school year and will soon be working with teachers to make classroom assignments for next year.
When we assemble classes we try to create balanced sections at each grade level. Among many important factors we consider are the child's academic achievement in several academic areas, the quality of the student's citizenship, work and study habits, and learning styles. We also take into consideration the teaching styles of the teachers and try to match the environments of their classrooms with the individual learning and social needs of the students. As you can see, it is a complicated process, but one which is done carefully.
We know that parents sometimes have preferences for teachers; however, we cannot place children in classes only on the basis of the parent's preferences. We group children for instructional purposes and placing them in class based on any other factors would defeat this purpose. In the past some parents have made requests for a certain teacher and their child was placed in that class. Parents may have concluded that it was only because of their request when, in fact, it was because the current teachers also felt it was a good placement based upon our criteria.
Because so many factors affect classroom assignments, we ask parents to refrain from requesting specific teachers. However, if you feel that there is a substantial, individualized reason to make a request which meets our instructional criteria as stated above, please put your request (and rationale) in writing and submit it to Mr. Owings no later than 4:00 p.m. on March 29. While we cannot guarantee that your request can be honored, we will certainly give it careful consideration as long as it is received before the March 29 deadline. (Because of the time required to construct class lists, we will not be able to accept requests after the March 29 deadline.) Please trust us to make the best classroom assignments possible. We need your trust in the teaching staff and administraiton to make the best placement possible with all of the information at our disposal. We will do the best we can because it is important to us that every child has a good chance for success. We sincerely appreciate your support.
Important Immunization Information
During the 2009 legislative session, Indiana Code 20-34-4-2 was revised, requiring the Indiana State Department of Health to "adopt rules under IC 4-22-2 to require school age children to receive additional immunizations against the following: Meningitis, Varicella, and Pertussis (whooping cough).
Due to this new legislation, we will see the following changes to the immunization requirements for the 2010-2011 school year:
All 6th-12th grade students will be required to have 2 doses of Varicella vaccine or a history of chicken pox disease.
All 6th-12th grade students will be required to have 1 dose of tetanus-diptheria-acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap) given on or after their 10th birthday.
All 6th-12th grade students will be required to have 1 dose of meningococcal vaccine (MCV4).
If your child has already received these immunizations, please send a copy of their updated immunization information to the school so that I can update their health record. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the new immunization requirements.
