Congratulations to all of our students at Northwestern Elementary who have received the Student of the Month award during the second semester of this school year.  The students earned this award on the basis of citizenship, responsibility, courtesy, service, character and respect.  Congratulations to Klair Merrell (January), Madelyn Millikan (February), Jaicie Smith (March), Ainsley Butler (April) and Logan Brittain (May).  These five students are outstanding young people and represent themselves very well.

The end of the year is a busy time.  We will ahve our 6th grade recognition on Wednesday, May 16, at 7:00 in the auditorium.  Please check the calendar for the other events in which your chid may be involved.

Important Immunization Information

During the 2009 legislative session, Indiana Code 20-34-4-2 was revised, requiring the Indiana State Department of Health to "adopt rules under IC 4-22-2 to require school age children to receive additional immunizations against the following: Meningitis, Varicella, and Pertussis (whooping cough).

Due to this new legislation, we will see the following changes to the immunization requirements for the 2010-2011 school year:

• All 6th-12th grade students will be required to have 2 doses of Varicella vaccine or a history of chicken pox disease.
• All 6th-12th grade students will be required to have 1 dose of tetanus-diptheria-acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap) given on or after their 10th birthday.
• All 6th-12th grade students will be required to have 1 dose of meningococcal vaccine (MCV4).

If your child has already received these immunizations, please send a copy of their updated immunization information to the school so that I can update their health record.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the new immunization requirements.
